Where does the naruto anime branch off from the manga?

I know that the naruto manga and anime are basically the same until a certain point, where the anime branches off from the storyline of the manga and does its own thing, i wanted to know when that started so i can watch from then on. i know that it happens somewhere after naruto fights orochimaru.
